A brief is essential to a designers work plan in order to display a theme through their work; these briefs are set out to spark inspiration for new designs.  During my specialism I have been given a subject matter for every project we have done. Our first project was called Map Manipulation where we were expected to research maps, Google Earth images, blue prints and other various references, offering potential for interesting shapes, structure, colour and ideas for deconstruction. Our most important exercise in this project was shape finding which lead towards design outcomes. We were also expected to investigate numerous artist researches such as Linda Florence John Galliano, Alexander McQueen as other method of stimulating inspiration. Metamorphosis/ Transformation/ Deconstruction was our second project. The brief involved producing a sculptural costume/dress and a series of sculptural textiles/ deconstruction techniques and mixed media samples. I endeavoured to explore and understand aspects of the metamorphosis theme: Greek mythology; Ovid Metamorphoses stories for example Prosepina, Icarus, Narcissus and many more. I dealt with processes such as pleating, ruching, knitting, deconstructing and gathering as well as playing with scale; exaggerating and emphasis on design details. I thoroughly enjoyed this project as it had a narrative behind it, which allowed creative methods of portraying the story through my garment. Our most recent project ‘Momento Making History’ our research was based on references related to historical collections- extracting elements that helped inform me to generate ideas for design. We had to include three elements; Research related to ageing and distressed qualities in surfaces and faded colour, Deconstructed fragments and ways of attaching portions of garment to each other. For inspiration we visited the Guildhall Museum and the Future Beauty 30 years of Japanese Fashion at the Barbican Centre. I have chosen this course because studying the Foundation Art & Design has assured my choice in studying fashion. Also this course appealed to me because of its exciting methods of creating garments such as pattern cutting. Another reason why I chose this university is the environment, as I do believe it is important that you are pleased were you study and live. I believe that stuffy fashion at a degree level will fulfil my potential as a Fashion Designer.
